Tye Angland saved from the impossible at Wagga
Wednesday, 30 April 2008

Leading Goulburn trainer Danny Williams will not be asking top Sydney apprentice Tye Angland to perform an impossible task in tomorrow’s $60,000 XXXX Gold Town Plate (1200m) at Wagga.

Williams has accepted with three horses, Wasted Emotions, Crosswise and Fox Lake and named Angland as the rider of all three.

However Wasted Emotions, the early favourite, is running at Randwick today and will not start.

And Williams will only run one of the remaining two but will not decide which one until tomorrow morning.

Williams said whichever horse does not run tomorrow will run in the Motor Traders’ Association Open (1000m) at Wagga on Friday.

Crosswise is the top weight for that race and Fox Lake second in the order.

Williams’ decision to run Wasted Emotions at Randwick will force a major re-shuffle of the market on the Town Plate.

Wasted Emotions was the early favourite in a wide market, ahead of the locally owned Zarvista and Fox Lake.

“I really don’t know which of the two will run in the Town Plate,” Williams said.

“I need to take some advice from the owners when I talk to them tonight plus look through the form closely.

“Fox Lake has been out of form but is well while Crosswise is also well but has not run for more than 12 months.”

However Fox Lake, a dual city winner, could be on the way back following his third to Hadaaf in the Freeway at Kembla Grange on April 6 after being held up in the straight.

Williams has been a major supporter of the Wagga carnival for some years and accepted with 13 horses for tomorrow and Friday.

“The Wagga carnival is one of the best events on the racing calendar with a great country atmosphere about it,” Williams said.

“I always try and have a team of horses ready for Wagga each year.

“Unfortunately I don’t have a horse for this year’s cup.”

The Listed $120,000 Shep’s Earthmoving Repairs Wagga Wagga Gold Cup (2000m) will be run on Friday.

Williams’ decision to have only one runner in the Town Plate plus the scratching of the Graeme Rogerson trained Sunset Run means three of the four emergencies will get a start.

Meanwhile New Edge has been handed a herculean task in trying to win his second successive Town Plate.

He won the race last year from barrier 10 but this year will jump from the extreme outside gate.

Nick Souquet rode the Jules de Smet trained six year old last year and is back aboard again tomorrow and while he knows the Wagga track well will need to use every ounce of local knowledge.

Souquet admitted it was a difficult task but not impossible.

“He is a good horse and good horses can overcome those sorts of problems,” Souquet said.

“Normally I would ride him up on the speed but from an alley like that I might have to drop him back in behind and see what happens from there.

“He ran a great race last start and I still think he is a big chance.”

That was when New Edge ran third to Wasted Emotions at Rosehill on April 12 after being crowded at the start.
