Stunning power from Sebring in Sires'
Saturday, 26 April 2008

In a stunning display of juvenile power Sebring added another chapter to his remarkable short career when taking out the $450,000, Group I, Inglis Sires’ Produce Stakes (1400m) at the Australian Jockey Club’s Autumn Carnival meeting at Randwick on Saturday.

Sebring, trained by Gai Waterhouse on the course, and ridden by stable jockey Blake Shinn back from suspension, took the field by the scruff of the neck and thumped them after taking the lead at the 300m.

Love And Kisses and Damien Oliver took the lead from barrier 11 with Shinn parking Sebring on the Encosta de Lago filly’s outside. The Redoute’s Choice filly Samantha Miss and Hugh Bowman tracked the leaders with Von Costa De Hero and Craig Williams in fifth on the outside at the 600m.

Williams improved Von Costa De Hero to third racing three wide outside Love And Kisses and Sebring as they swung for the long run to the line. However Shinn had Sebring covering every move and he slid by Love And Kisses on his inside as they went over the hill, and dared Von Costa De Hero to go with him.

Sebring gave the field plenty of opportunity to catch him if they could as he led effectively for the length of the straight. Von Costa De Hero faded with 225m to run, and it was left to Samantha Miss and a brave Love And Kisses to try and stay in touch with the athletic colt up front.

The winning margin was 1L, with Samantha Miss second, a head over Love And Kisses, with Glowlamp fourth. The time was 1.25.99 and the final 600m was covered in 38.29. Sebring paid $2.20 on NSW TAB.

“He is champion two-year-old, there is no two ways about it,” declared Waterhouse.

“This is the most dominant male we have seen in Australia for a long time. He dominated them in the Golden Slipper and then comes out in the Sires’ on a heavy track over 1400m and does it again.

“He was just off the speed in second and when he came around the turn I thought ‘is he going to do it’ and then of course he does,” she said.

“It is fantastic,” said syndicator Denise Martin.

“The army is growing all the time and we seem to have gone from an army of a hundred to a thousand today.

“He is just a grand colt and with Blake having his parents here we are all delighted,” she said.

Martin said that she had not even considered offers for Sebring for stud duties.

“The owners are just happy to race him and enjoy the day,” she said.

“She ran into the top two-year-old of the season and it was a brave effort,” said Kris Lees, trainer of Samantha Miss.

“She will be better the further she goes and whatever she does this preparation I always thought she would make a lovely three-year-old,” he added.

Lees said that Samantha Miss will be nominated for the third leg of the Two-Year-Old Triple Crown, the Group I Champagne Stakes (1600m) next Saturday, but he would wait to see how the filly came through Saturday’s race before accepting.

“I think she will get her Group I in the spring,” said Chris Waller, trainer of Love And Kisses.

Waller said that he will target the Flight Stake over 1600m at Randwick, and then the Thousand Guineas over 1600m at Caulfield with Love And Kisses.

“It was great and the owners were terrific through that time when I could not ride the horse,” said Shinn of his returning from suspension that ruled him out of the winning Golden Slipper ride.

“They knew I would be down, but they lifted my spirits knowing I could ride this week.

“He had trained terrific on the track and done really well. 1400m was of no concern to us and I knew that if I was able to get him out of the barriers and get him into a good position that I would win the race,” he said.

That was the story of the race and Shinn was right to be confident, and the Sebring camp must now consider that they have an excellent chance of taking the Triple Crown as Waterhouse did with the recently retired Dance Hero in 2004.

The Sebring ownership group is officially J Hazzisevastos, Team Henderson Racing Synd, S Mekertichian, Ms M Butler, J & Mrs A McDonnell, Ms D Dunphy, B Leonard, J Screnci and Mrs W Mullens, but in a riot of purple and white stars ties and scarfs the army as Martin describes its is much larger. They are having the ride of their lives and their More Than Ready colt, out of the Flying Spur mare Purespeed, is worth many millions when they do decide to sell. In the meantime they have the stakes of $2,448,000.
