Girl power to the fore at Dubbo
Friday, 18 April 2008

Two women, one steeped in racing tradition and the other who fell in love with racehorses as a teenager, combine at Dubbo on Sunday chasing success with All Again in the $25,000 Brennan’s Mitre 10 Zoo City Cup (1600m).

Trainer Lesley Jeffriess is the daughter of Tamworth training legend, Merv Corliss. Jeffriess will also saddle up Victory Charm (Adrian Robinson) for her father in the Zoo City Cup. Corliss, aged in his eighties, is recovering from an operation in Sydney on Friday.

Jockey Henry, enjoying one of her best season’s and leading the Hunter and North West Racing Association premiership, had no family racing background but fell in love with the racehorses during her initial employment.

All Again tackles a smart field in the Dubbo feature. “I’d love to win this race (Zoo City Cup) for Leanne. Leanne and her dad were really good to me as an apprentice and it would be nice to try and repay some favours,” Henry said.

The four-year-old gelding comes off an encouraging second to Orange Cup winner Are You Joeken in the Gooree Mile (1600m) at Mudgee on April 6. All Again meets the Max Crockett-trained galloper 1.5kg better at the weights on Sunday.

The Reenact gelding was previously seventh to Sussman in the Armidale Cup (1900m).

“I was happy with his run the other day,” Jeffriess said. “The race wasn’t run to suit. The leader took off from the 800 metres and everything was off the bit chasing. He kept giving right to the line.

“That was coming off his Armidale cup run, it was a race I shouldn’t started in. He was backing up for his third run in quick succession but the owners were keen to start so he went around.

“He’s done well since Mudgee and while it’s a hard race, I’m confident he can run very well.”

Henry replaced Darren Jones aboard All Again at Mudgee.

“Darren usually rides the horse but he broke his arm the day before and I spotted Leanne (Henry) at the races and asked if she could ride,” Jeffriess said. “She is riding really well.”

Henry, who was apprenticed to Vince Stein, Paul St Vincent and later Clarry Conners in Sydney, has just moved from Wallabadah to Muswellbrook.

“All Again chased a long way from home at Mudgee but toughed it out,” she said. “It’s a stronger field but he’s very honest.”

Topweight Juerga (Allan Robinson), previously trained by Mark Jones and now with Stephen Hood at Rosehill, returns to his former home track and indicated he was getting back to his best with a strong second to Lyncean Academy in the Muswellbrook Cup (1750m) last start.

Colour City Cup runner-up Nampara Bullet will have plenty of admirers, especially as Greg Ryan has stuck with the John Langworthy-trained gelding.
