Sebring gives Waterhouse best Slipper chance
Thursday, 17 April 2008

Champion trainer Gai Waterhouse will be shooting for her third win in the world’s richest two-year-old race when she saddles up two runners, including race favourite Sebring, in the $3,500,000 Group One AAMI Golden Slipper (1200m) at Rosehill this Saturday.

Sebring is currently a $5.00 favourite with TAB Sportsbet and with a record of three wins from three starts, champion jockey Glen Boss on board and an ideal barrier in six, the chestnut colt is a strong chance of emulating Waterhouse’s previous two winners, Ha Ha and Dance Hero.

Waterhouse’s other hope, She’s Meaner, had her colours lowered for the first time in her career when a close-up second in the Magic Millions on the Gold Coast a month ago, however her form prior to that was impeccable and is well worth a look at her current price of $15.

Rival trainer David Hayes is using a two-pronged attack in an attempt to win his second slipper in three years. Hayes, who saddled up 2006 winner Miss Finland, is using class gallopers and weight of numbers to get the desired result.

The Hayes arsenal is made up of the Blue Diamond Stakes quinella in Reaan and All American, the VRC Sires Produce winner in Von Costa De Hero and last start winner Hips Don’t Lie. With that type of horse flesh at his disposal, it would not surprise to see multiple Hayes runners in the finish.

All American, to be ridden by Brad Rawiller, is currently third favourite with TAB Sportsbet at $10, and with the only blot on his copybook being a close second to stablemate, Reaan in the Blue Diamond, he looks to be Hayes best chance at snagging Slipper number two.

Reaan is currently at $18 because of his inability to get around the tight Canterbury circuit in a key lead-up race. If he can get on the correct foot and find the form that took him and jockey Dwayne Dunn to their Blue Diamond win the $18 on offer will seem generous.

If Hayes can’t do it for South Australia, it may be Morphettville trainer Leon MacDonald with his brilliant filly Augusta Proud.

Augusta Proud and jockey Clare Lindop have been to the races six times so far and have won every start. The pair backed up the $250,000 cheque they collected in the Adelaide Magic Millions with a million dollar version in the Gold Coast Magic Millions in late March.

The filly has won her races when leading and coming off the speed so is more than capable of using gate one to her advantage. At $7.50 with TAB Sportsbet, Augusta Proud will definitely give backers a thrill.

Another runner who has a great chance is the Bart Cummings-trained Related. The son of Elusive Quality has had one start for a second but on that occasion he had his name mentioned as much in the stewards report as he did in the race call.

The colt finished second behind Krupt in the Todman Stakes, but stewards comments read, blocked for run, disappointed for run, checked at 200m, so it may be worth considering the effort as a virtual win considering he was only beaten a nose on the line.

Cummings hasn't saddled a Slipper winner since 1979 when the filly Century Miss and apprentice Wayne Harris saluted the judge first. Related is a $12 hope with TAB Sportsbet.

Lastly, it would be wise not to dismiss a trainer who managed to string together four straight Slipper wins in the mid 90’s. That trainer, Lee Freedman, has his hopes resting with Sugarbabe in the 1200m dash.

The filly was ridden upside down for a short head second last start in the Magic Night. That followed her slashing come from last performance in the Magic Millions in which she eventually finished a superb fifth. With the race run to suit, the Hall of Fame trainer has a genuine chance at $13.
