Race wear Guidelines for Autumn Winter
LADIES
Entrants MUST comply with the following:
- Wear a felt hat. Also allowable are feathers, fabric hats (as long as the fabric has an autumnal/winter feel) and autumnal fascinators. No flowers or straw hats.
- If wearing a shorter style skirt, hosiery is imperative.
- The outfit should be made of winter fabrics such as wool. Chiffon and sheer fabrics are inappropriate. Definitely no denim, lurex or white lycra.
- Ensure that the outfit and hat were designed to be worn during the day. The races is not a cocktail party, so don't wear anything too glittery. Skirts and dresses that are floor length are not appropriate. If you could wear it to a formal or a ball, you shouldn't wear it to the races.
- Shoes must have a closed toe, or peep toe. Sling backs are fine, but no strappy sandals. Platform shoes and wedge heels are not appropriate.
- Ones shoes, bag and hat should coordinate. They don't have to exactly 'match', but should work together.
- Don't show too much skin. It is best not to reveal a lot of leg and clevage. One or the other, but be modest. Low backed dresses are not so appropriate, especially for winter.
- Try to incorporate a jacket into your outfit. They look smart, dress up any outfit and keep you warm. No outfit looks good on a freezing cold, blue body.
- Make sure you are well groomed. Ensure your shoes are clean, your hair is nicely blow-dried or tied up neatly and your make up looks fresh all day. Regular trips to the loo to check your make up is a great idea, especially after a few drinks. And, make sure you reapply some gloss or lipstick before entering Fashions on the Field.
Good additions to an outfit:
- Gloves - leather gloves that coordinate with your outfit are a fantastic accessory.
- Lapel flowers - either real or fake, make sure they coordinate.
- Race wallet - leather race wallets are the perfect racing accessory and ensure that your race book looks as chic as you do.
- Jewellery - brooches are very big at present, especially antique looking ones. Don't over do the jewellery though - keep the really glitzy stuff for a nightclub.
- Umbrella - a lovely umbrella is both practical and stylish.
- Wrap/Pashmina - again, very practical and looks great if it works with your outfit.
MEN:
Entrants are advised to comply with the following:
- Men must wear a suit. Trousers and a blazer can be acceptable, but must look very smart.
- Men must ensure that their tie, shirt and suit all coordinate with each other.
- Men must be wearing dark socks. White socks are an absolute no-no.
- Ensure that your shoe coordinates with your outfit. Black shoes for black, grey and blue suits; brown shoes for fawn, tan, brown or beige suits.
- Belts should match shoes.
- Grooming - men's grooming is crucial. Ensure hair is neatly done (with a good cut), freshly shaven, groom brows and trim nasal hairs. Shiny shoes win points too.
Good accessories for men:
- Hat - don't just pull some old thing out from under the bed or from the op-shop. Find a great felt trilby, look after it and it will last you for years.
- Pocket kerchiefs that coordinate with your tie look very smart.
- Umbrellas - dapper and practical.
- Good sunglasses. Not sporty, reflective numbers - they must be chic and sophisticated.
- Walking cane - only for the more mature gents
- Great cufflinks - cufflinks really finish an outfit
- Shirt - make sure you have a great shirt - French cuffs and wing collars are very contemporary. Also, go for plain white or a simple pattern.
- Lapel flowers - the ladies love them and they look very smart. If you go with your girlfriend, try to coordinate your flower to her outfit.
